Going Clear

Friday, we’re rebroadcasting our conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lawrence Wright. His investigation into the Church of Scientology is the basis for a new documentary airing on HBO. Wright’s book is more than an expose of the inner workings of Scientology. Wright was interested in a “process of belief” … what makes it so alluring and how rational people can come to believe fantastic things. The book is called Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief.

Lawrence Wright is a staff writer for The New Yorker. His book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 [Indiebound|Amazon] earned him a Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. His most recent book is called Thirteen Days in September: Carter, Begin, and Sadat at Camp David. [Indiebound|Amazon]

Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief [Indiebound|Amazon] is the basis for a documentary by director Alex Gibney. It premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is currently airing on HBO. [Details]
