As a journalist at NPR for almost 40 years, Howard Berkes has covered his fair share of ground-breaking, muckraking stories. Now, it’s time to retire. But before he does, Berkes is putting the finishing touches on a story he’s been reporting for close to six years. It’s about hardworking men and women in the coal mines of Appalachia suffering and dying from black lung disease. Berkes joins us Thursday to talk about his career, the importance of asking hard questions, and giving voices to the voiceless.
