Every year, the Third Coast International Audio Festival seeks out the best new audio stories from around the world. The winning entries in the competition exhibit radio’s ability to provoke, entertain and transport us with little more than the sound of the honest human voice. Tuesday on RadioWest, we’re featuring a few of the winning stories from this year's contest and talking with some of their producers. We’ll spy on the world below from the vantage of a red-eye flight, investigate a Guatemalan massacre and meet a teenage Olympic boxing hopeful.
Since, 2001, the Third Coast International Audio Festival has held the Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition. The competition has honored more than 100 extraordinary stories from seven countries/four continents and has bestowed $250,000 in cash prizes to many of the most innovative producers of the past decade.

- Joe Richman and Sue Jaye Johnson, along with Samara Freemark, produced the story "Teen Contender." It originally appeared on NPR's All Things Considered, and it won the gold award in the 2012 TC/RHDF Competition. Joe Richman is the founder of Radio Diaries. Sue Jaye Johnson is a multimedia storyteller. She has been documenting women's boxing for two years.
- Habiba Nosheen and Brian Reed produced the story "What Happened at Dos Erres?" for This American Life. It won the silver award in the 2012 TC/RHDF Competition. Habiba Nosheen is a freelance journalist and an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Brian Reed is a producer at This American Life.
- Laurence Grissell produced the bronze-award winning story "Overnight Delivery" for the BBC Radio 4 program Wireless Nights. He is a producer for the documentary unit at BBC Radio.
- Julie Shapiro is the artistic director of the Third Coast International Audio Festival. Shas been with the project since its inception in 2000
Today's RadioWest also features audio from the story "The Wisdom of Jay Thunderbolt" from the podcast Love+Radio. It won the gold award in the 2011 TC/RHDF Competition.
