When he started shooting video of his skateboarding friends, Bing Liu figured he was just making another skating video. He ended up with a documentary film about the minefield of masculinity boys face on the road to adulthood.
In its early stages, filmmaker Bing Liu’s documentary Minding the Gap wasn’t much more than a skateboarding video. But the more he filmed, the better he got to know his skating buddies in a declining Rust Belt town, and the more personal the project became. Liu learned that he and his friends didn’t just share a love of skateboarding; they also shared personal histories of domestic abuse. Liu joins us Wednesday to talk about his film and its exploration of boys navigating the path to adulthood.
On Wednesday, May 9, RadioWest and the Utah Film Center will present a free screening of Bing Liu's film Minding the Gap as part of our Through the Lens series. It's at 7:00 p.m. at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Bing Liu will be there for a Q&A after the screening. Seating is limited, so get there early.
