Defining Christian Nationalism

Last month, a Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) poll gauged the rising influence of Christian nationalism among religious Americans. Its findings were eye opening.

Nearly two-thirds of white evangelical Protestants said they were either sympathizers or adherents to Christian nationalism. The fourth highest group of sympathizers listed were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — a ranking, according to our guest Taylor Petrey, that should concern the Church. But these polls don’t always tell the full story. Political science professor Quin Monson was part of a similar study in 2020, and learned that the questions they asked weren’t specific enough to get at the heart of some Christian nationalist beliefs. While he sees improvement in the new PRRI poll, he says that we still have to ask: How do the participants see themselves in these questions? This Friday at 11 a.m., we will discuss religion and Christian nationalism.
