In the wake of the death of George Floyd, protestors across the country have been pushing to defund the police. The same demands can be heard in Utah, and they’re only getting louder.
Members of the Salt Lake City Council have received thousands of comments calling for police reform and reduced funding for law enforcement. But what exactly would a lower police budget mean for the community? What kind of change would it take to address the systemic injustices protestors are decrying? And is there enough political will for meaningful change to happen? We’ll ask those questions, and more, in the first hour of the show this week.
GUESTS:
- Mayor Erin Mendenhall, mayor of Salt Lake City
- Police Chief Mike Brown, chief of police of the Salt Lake City Police Department
- Council Member Amy Fowler, represents District 7 on the Salt Lake City Council
- Dr. LaShawn Williams, assistant professor at Utah Valley University in social work and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
