The New Localism

Urban expert Bruce Katz has noticed a change in how our world is structured. National states and governments no longer hold the central power to fix our modern world. Cities and metropolitan regions, he says, are now in charge of their own futures.

Thursday, we’re talking about the role cities play in an era of dysfunctional federal government. Urban expert Bruce Katz and his colleagues have noticed a dramatic change in where the power lay to address the most pressing problems of modern life. National states are no longer in the driver’s seat, he says. Instead, cities and public-private networks are rising up and working together to get things done. Katz calls it “new localism.” He and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams will join us to talk about it.

On Wednesday, January 24, Brookings Institution scholars Bruce J. Katz and Jeremy Nowak will be in Salt Lake City to discuss their new book The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism. That event is hosted by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams. It will take place at the Thomas S. Monson Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Space is limited and reservations to attend are required. DETAILS.
