Albert Maysles has made dozens of films. And many of them are landmarks in documentary filmmaking. In fact, he and his brother David were pioneers in non-fiction feature films. Their work includes Salesman, Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens. The power of truth lies at the core of Maysles’ work, but it’s love that drives it. “After all,” he says, “the knowledge of the real world is exactly what we need to better understand and therefore possibly to love one another.” Albert Maysles joins us to talk about his career and the world he sees through his lens.

Here’s what Doug Fabrizio has to say about the episode:

Albert Maysles and his brother David really created some of the great films of all time, I think. Two of my favorite documentaries, Grey Gardens and Salesman, were made by the Maysles brothers. In fact, if you haven’t seen them yet, you need to put them on your list. They’re amazing films. So I have to say — I was really kind of intimidated and nervous when Albert Maysles came into the studio in 2006. But I didn’t need to be nervous, because he couldn’t have been more lovely.
