Emma Hauck, letter to her husband, 1909

In 1909, a young woman with schizophrenia wrote a letter to her husband repeating the plea, Sweetheart, Come. Utah playwright Melissa Leilani Larson has written a play to imagine the woman's journey.

In 1909, a young mother wrote a letter to her husband from the hospital where she was being treated for schizophrenia. In cramped, overlapped writing that filled the page, she repeated the plea, “Sweetheart, Come.” Playwright Melissa Leilani Larson wanted to know more about Emma Hauck’s life, but the only way she could do that was to imagine how Emma arrived at such a heartbreaking place. Thursday, Larson joins us to talk about her writing and Pygmalion Production’s staging of her latest play.

Pygmalion ProductionsSweetheart, Come runs through May 18 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Tickets are available by calling ArtTix at 801-355-ARTS (2787) or online at artsaltlake.org
