Through the Lens — Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth

Thursday, we continue our Through the Lens film series with a documentary about pioneering writer Alice Walker. She made history as the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel The Color Purple. Director Pratibha Pamar’s film tells the dramatic story of Walker’s life and reveals the inspiration for many of her works. It also explores Walker’s refusal to submit to gender stereotypes or compromise her artistic search for beauty and truth.

On Thursday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m., Alice Walker will give a reading at the Tower at Rice-Eccles Stadium. That event is hosted by the Barbara L. & Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy. DETAILS

Alice Walker [Amazon|Indiebound] is the author of numerous books, including The Color Purple—which won the Pulitizer Price for Fiction and the National Book Award—Possessing the Secret of Joy and . Her latest book is The Cushion in the Road: Meditation and Wandering as the Whole World Awakens to Being in Harm’s Way.

Pratibha Pamar directed and wrote the documentary film Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth. Her past films include Nina’s Heavenly Delights and Warrior Marks, based was on the book of the same name co-authored by Pamar and Alice Walker.

Doug Fabrizio has been reporting for KUER News since 1987, and became News Director in 1993. In 2001, he became host and executive producer of KUER's RadioWest, a one hour conversation/call-in show on KUER 90.1 in Salt Lake City. He has gained a reputation for his thoughtful style. He has interviewed everyone from Isabel Allende to the Dalai Lama, and from Madeleine Albright to Desmond Tutu. His interview skills landed him a spot as a guest host of the national NPR program, "Talk of the Nation." He has won numerous awards for his reporting and for his work with RadioWest and KUED's Utah NOW from such organizations as the Society of Professional Journalists, the Utah Broadcasters Association, the Public Radio News Directors Association and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
