On Tuesday, Governor Spencer Cox vetoed a bill that would’ve banned young transgender athletes from competing on girls’ teams. On Friday, the Utah legislature will attempt to overturn the governor’s veto.
During the 2022 Utah Legislative Session, an earlier edition of the bill stalled. That version would’ve created a commission that could grant permission to transgender girls to join teams that aligned with their gender identities. But during the final hours of the session, the bill resurfaced — this time banning transgender girls outright. The session to override Governor Cox’s veto is scheduled for Friday afternoon — and lawmakers think they have the votes to succeed. Friday morning, we’ll be joined by the governor, and others, to process this moment.
