Utah is the epicenter of the so-called “troubled-teen” industry, with many programs seeing thousands of young people pass through their doors. And yet, for as many people as this industry has served, until recently, it had little-to-no government oversight.

Digging into this world is Sent Away, a new investigative podcast from KUER, The Salt Lake Tribune and APM Reports. The podcast’s team of reporters spent a year uncovering alleged abuses within some of these teen treatment programs in Utah, looking especially hard at how the state failed to intervene to keep kids safe. We’re joined by reporters David Fuchs and Jessica Miller, co-hosts of Sent Away, who’ll share what they discovered through their investigation.
