Michael Easter On How To Embrace Discomfort

Benjamin Bombard
/
KUER

More human beings are more comfortable today than at any time in the history of our species. And sure, comfort is nice, but what if we actually have too much of it?

In a new book, the journalist Michael Easter writes about how he uprooted himself from his safe, comfortable life at home and traveled around the world in search of discomfort. He wanted to understand why we seek out comfort, what happens when we get too much of it, and how we might benefit from less of it. He says that a growing body of evidence shows how embracing physical and mental discomfort can make us happier, healthier and more resilient. Easter’s book is called The Comfort Crisis, and he joins us this week to talk about it. (Rebroadcast)
