The Alien Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill

Tamarra Kemsley
/
Yale University Press

On September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill claimed they were abducted by “beings that were somehow not human.”

Betty and Barney were an interracial couple of the 60’s — Barney a postal worker, Betty a social worker, both supporters of liberal politics and active in the civil rights movement —Unitarians. But after their story was repeatedly dismissed, they lost belief in the change they were working toward. In a biography of the famous couple, but also a lens into American life today, our guest, author Matthew Bowman, tells the story of Betty and Barney in his book “The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights, and the New Age in America.”

Bowman’s book will be out August 29 and is available for preorder now. {Yale University Press |Amazon | Bookshop}
