‘The Covenant of Water’ with Abraham Verghese

Abraham Verghese’s novel “The Covenant of Water” is a critical sensation. We’re talking with him about writing it, as well as the intersection between art and medicine.

Set in India between the years 1900 and 1977, “The Covenant of Water” traces a family down the generations, whose lives and history are characterized by death by drowning. Throughout, we follow the life of a woman — first as a child when she meets her adult husband and later as a matriarch — who will come to be known as Big Ammachi. But the book is about more than her story; it’s also about the passing of time, medicine and humanity itself.
