The Miracle Of The Gulls And Other Utah Legends

Kelsie Moore
/
KUER

One of Utah’s many oddities is its state bird: the California Gull. But did you know that the humble gull is the hero in its own miracle tale?

In celebration of Pioneer Day, we’re looking at the story that made Utah — a landlocked state — honor the gull, along with other folktales from our state’s history. Whether you’re celebrating Pioneer Day or Pie and Beer Day this July 24, join us for stories from Utah’s rich cultural past. We’ll also talk about what folklore is and examine its purpose and importance within a community.
