A Conversation with Poet Rio Cortez

Paul Tran

The poet Rio Cortez lives in New York City, but her poetry points back to her childhood in Utah.

"Golden Ax" is Cortez’s latest poetry collection. Here, she reckons with growing up Black in the Salt Lake City area, exploring her family’s history of settling in the West — what she calls “Afro-pioneerism.” She also recalls her recent ancestors, including athlete and Mormon convert Abner Leonard Howell. This Friday at noon, Rio Cortez joins us for an intimate conversation about her work.
