A Conversation with Heather Armstrong

Gallery Books

On Tuesday, Heather Armstrong died by suicide after a lifetime struggle with depression.

In 2001, Armstrong created the website Dooce, and quickly gained a following for her candid writing about motherhood and depression. In 2019, we spoke to her about her memoir “The Valedictorian of Being Dead,” where she recounted the time she participated in a clinical trial to flatline the brain — a risky attempt to “reboot” the system. For her, the process was essentially a process of dying in order to live. We are rebroadcasting our conversation with Heather Armstrong this Friday at noon and again on Saturday at 11 a.m.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, help is available. Call the National Suicide and Crisis hotline by dialing 988.
