The journalist Helen Lewis says that Austin, Texas, is at the center of a Venn diagram encompassing culture, gun ranges, low taxes and kombucha. Why? Because podcaster Joe Rogan lives there.

Rogan moved to Austin in 2020, in part because of the city’s more relaxed pandemic policies. Most weeks, he performs at his comedy club, where patrons can pay $50 to see Rogan’s set — no phones allowed. Rogan’s politics aren’t easy to pin down. He’s annoyed by liberal scolds, but he supports gay marriage and abortion access. He voted third party in 2020. He may think President Biden was replaced by a body-double. He’s skeptical of gender medicine for kids. Meanwhile, the Rogan worldview has changed Austin itself. Helen Lewis says the city is now a haven for “manosphere influencers, productivity optimizers, stand-ups and male-wellness gurus.” She joins us to talk about the Rogan-ization of Austin, Texas.
