The Horrors of an Indian Residential School

In 2021, unmarked graves were discovered at several residential boarding schools in Canada. Then the investigations began.

St. Joseph’s Mission in Williams Lake, British Columbia, was one of those schools. Ed Archie NoiseCat was born — and abandoned — there. He spent most of his life not wanting to talk about it. When the investigation into the school began, Ed's son, Julian Brave NoiseCat, wanted to talk about it, and made a documentary about the investigation. The resulting film is more than a look into a shameful chapter of Canada’s past. It's about the hard truths a community and a family have to face.

"Sugarcane" premieres Dec. 9 on National Geographic and is available to stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. More information can be found here.
