How One Man’s Love of Pot Launched a Movement

Dennis Peron
Join the Club
Dennis Peron

Dennis Peron came back from the Vietnam War with three pounds of marijuana. Later, he’d become one of the preeminent figures in the movement to legalize weed.

Peron says the first joint he ever smoked changed his life. Once he was back stateside, he started a commune in San Francisco where everyone was using weed. The gay rights movement was picking up momentum, too. Years later, when Peron’s boyfriend Jonathan died of AIDS, he became an activist. Marijuana had been the only thing making Jonathan’s life bearable. So, Dennis founded the Cannabis Buyer’s Club. But that was just the beginning. The filmmakers Kip Andersen and Chris O’Connell spoke with Peron before he passed away in 2018. Andersen is joining us to talk about their documentary. It’s called “Join the Club.”

“Join the Club” is part of our Through the Lens film series, in partnership with the Utah Film Center. The film will screen on the opening night of the Utah Queer Film Festival on Saturday, October 25th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Doug Fabrizio and the filmmaker Chris O’Connell. Admission to the screening is donation based. You can find more information about how to attend here.
