What does it mean to be dopesick? When you're addicted and have run out of pills, it means misery and desperation. Journalist Beth Macy joins us with chilling stories from America's opioid crisis.
Journalist Beth Macy’s quest to understand the opioid epidemic started with one grieving mother’s question: why did her son die? We’ve heard a lot about how pharmaceutical companies, the illicit drug trade, joblessness, and poverty have contributed to the crisis. Macy’s goal with her new book though is to make people care about the some 300,000 individuals who will die from addiction in the next five years. She joins us Monday to tell personal stories at the heart of the crisis.
Beth Macy is a journalist who covered the opioid crisis for The Roanoke Times in Virginia. She's the author of three books including her latest Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America [Indie bookstores|Amazon|Audible]
