Robert Downey Jr. returned to theaters last weekend as Sherlock Holmes, taking in nearly $40 million. That's not bad for a 124-year-old hero. The scholar Leslie Klinger says that the character has had enduring appeal since Arthur Conan Doyle first introduced him in 1887 because Holmes is the kind of person we'd all like to be: smart, always in command and always doing the right thing.
