The Real Lolita
Behind Vladimir Nabokov's brilliant and disturbing novel Lolita is a true story of a girl who was kidnapped and abused by a middle-aged man. Journalist Sarah Weinman's book is about The Real Lolita.
When journalist Sarah Weinman first read Nobokov’s infamous novel Lolita, she was of course disturbed by the story of a 12-year-old girl kidnapped and abused by a middle-aged sexual predator. But she was also in awe of his brilliant prose. Years later Weinman learned of Sally Horner, a girl whose real-life case eerily paralleled Nobokov’s fiction. Weinman tells Horner’s story, and asks how this true crime inspired Nobokov. She joins us to talk about The Real Lolita. (Rebroadcast)
