Steve Urquhart’s Spiritual Trip

In 2020, former Utah State legislator Steve Urquhart founded a religion. Their sacrament? Magic mushrooms.

Urquhart calls his church The Divine Assembly. Its members believe that taking psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, brings them closer to God. Urquhart served 15 years in Utah’s state legislature — as a conservative Republican and a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We’ll talk with him about his journey away from public office and Mormonism, and how these shifts led him to create a new faith this Friday at noon.
