Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality, Pt. 2

INTELLECTUAL RESERVE, INC.

We’re continuing our conversation about Black Latter-day Saints and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ long-awaited decision to grant Black men the priesthood.

The historian Matthew Harris is still with us. Much of his book, “Second Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality,” is about the LDS Church’s long-standing practice that not only excluded Black males from the priesthood, but also taught that people of color were subject to a curse — earned, apparently, in a pre-existence. The priesthood doctrine was changed in 1978, but the church has never formally apologized for it. Today, we’re talking about the revelation that changed the infamous Mormon doctrine.

GUEST —
