QAnon and the Destruction of the American Family

You’d think that certain bonds couldn’t be broken by different beliefs, even strongly opposed convictions. But some conspiracies are just that powerful.

QAnon is one of those conspiracies. Here's the short version: A cabal of liberal elites and movie stars is trafficking children, and Donald Trump is fighting to save them. In a new book, the journalist Jesselyn Cook tells the stories of five American families caught in the QAnon web. There’s a QAnon-obsessed mother who disowns her once beloved son; a couple whose decades-long relationship is sorely tested; sisters, one of whom becomes an activist, the other a conspiracy theorist; and more. And this goes beyond QAnon; what Cook cares about is why people believe the unbelievable and the way conspiracy theories assault the nation on a most personal of levels — the family.
