Jill Lepore On The Rise Of Doubt

Renee Bright / KUER

In the second season of her podcast The Last Archive, historian Jill Lepore journeys through the dusty halls of history to explore the evolution of doubt in the past century.

Beginning with the 1925 Scopes Trial and ending up at the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Lepore investigates the erosion of trust in America. As she examines those events, Lepore focuses on the tools and technologies used to propagate propaganda and disinformation. She also looks into the people who, almost thoughtlessly and heedlessly, use those tools to sow doubt, undermine institutions and upend the arbitration of knowledge. Lepore joined us to talk about how trust itself has come to be politicized.
