Web Extra: Derek Kitchen On Exploring Polyamory

Derek Kitchen

Before he was a Utah State Senator, Derek Kitchen was part of an important lawsuit that challenged the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. But while he was open about his homosexuality, he chose not to talk about the polyamorous part of his life, because…it’s complicated.

Last week we profiled an article in The New Yorker by the writer Andrew Solomon. He’s been exploring changing ideas about what family and marriage mean, and he spoke with people in polygamist families and in polyamorous ones, too. In that article for the first time, he revealed publicly that Derek Kitchen was in a polyamorous relationship. Kitchen joined us to talk about that portion of his life and how we think about the different forms love can take.

Derek Kitchen is a Utah State Senator representing the state's 2nd district.
