Writer Craig Childs On The Beauty Of Dry Places

Apr 30, 2021

In his latest book, the writer and adventurer Craig Childs writes that he dreams of canyons and was born to deserts — deserts ruled by a god of drought who leaves them dry on purpose.

Childs’ book, Virga and Bone, is a collection of essays about the essential elements of deserts, stuff like bones, balanced rocks and dry rain. In the desert, he notes, everything is stripped down to its barest nature. But if you give yourself over to that dry landscape, it’ll wear you down, too — which can actually be a good thing. Childs joins us Friday at 11 a.m. MT for a conversation about how deserts can shape us and the richness we can find in these spare places.
