Even people who don’t like jazz know the name Miles Davis. More than just a horn player, Davis was a musical genius and a cultural icon who lived life on his own terms and innovated with relentless energy. Just when it seemed like the times had passed him by, he would break with convention, disregard tradition and forge new sounds that inspired generations of musicians. Director Stanley Nelson’s latest film profiles Davis’s mercurial and unique life, which gave birth to the word “cool.”

Stanley Nelson directed and produced the documentary film Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool. It's showing in the Documentary Premiers section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It's the tenth film Nelson has shown at the festival.
