Going 'Under Jerusalem' With Journalist Andrew Lawler

Renee Bright
/
KUER

The city of Jerusalem is widely thought of as the gateway to heaven. And yet, as the journalist Andrew Lawler reveals in a new book, what lay below the Holy City is almost as intriguing as what many believe awaits above it.

In the past century and a half, a colorful cast of archaeologists, missionaries, zealots and fortune seekers have delved into Jerusalem’s subterranean tombs, tunnels and trenches in search of hard evidence of biblical stories. Lawler says that these efforts have profoundly shaped our understanding not only of the Holy City’s history, but also of it’s hotly disputed present. His book is called Under Jerusalem, and he joins us this Friday at noon to share what he’s learned about the buried history of the world’s most contested city. (Rebroadcast)

Andrew Lawler's book is Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City. [IndieBound|BookShop|Amazon|Audible]
