What Happens to the Group When the Individual Tops All?

American culture promotes a strong sense of individualism. But, what happens when individualism trumps community?

Our guests this week, BYU political science professors Chris Karpowitz and Kelly Patterson, conducted a study showing that people who scored high on moral individualism were less likely to sacrifice in ways that contributed to the common good. Together, they wrote the article “Moral Individualism in Modern Politics: A New Measure Inspired by Political Theory,” examining what this means for political science. They join us Friday at 11 a.m. to talk about their findings.

GUESTS:

  • Chris Karpowitz | Professor of political science and co-editor in chief of “Political Behavior” at Brigham Young University and co-author of: “Moral Individualism in Modern Politics”
  • Kelly Patterson | Professor of political science and senior scholar in the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University and co-author of: Moral Individualism in Modern Politics

Airdate: Friday, September 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
