RadioWest Films: ‘A Sister Must Sacrifice’

A Sister Must Sacrifice

Miranda couldn’t wait to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She just didn’t know her weight would be a problem.

When Miranda got to the mission field, she became caught up in a strange kind of diet culture — one that seemed to associate thinness with Godliness, as well as success as a missionary. She told her story to RadioWest filmmaker Delaney Plant, who quickly learned that Miranda’s experience wasn’t unique. Plant spoke with dozens of women who went on LDS missions, many of whom shared their own accounts of struggling with food while serving. We’re exploring their stories on the show, and asking what role the Church itself plays in creating a culture that sees being skinny as being holy.

RadioWest Films is a partnership between PBS Utah and KUER. You can watch “A Sister Must Sacrifice” here.
