For many of us, cooking is an annoying, boring chore. But the food writer Bee Wilson says there’s a simple secret to an easier life in the kitchen, and it begins with the person who cooks.

Wilson has experienced the drag of cooking herself. Years ago, as the middle-aged mom of three children, preparing dinner, she wrote that it “felt like a race against the clock at the wrong time with the wrong ingredients.” It was in the wake of personal grief that she rediscovered how cooking itself can be a remedy from stress. Her new book, “The Secret of Cooking,” is full of simple ideas and approachable recipes to help others cook more and enjoy it more, even if the “rest of life is as sad or difficult as the rest of life usually is.”
