Through the Lens: ‘Subject’

Subject documentary

Being featured in a documentary changes your life — and not just during the filming. Being a participant can often also mean public scrutiny, maybe trauma, for years and years.

Being featured in a documentary changes your life — and not just during the filming. Being a subject can often also mean public scrutiny, maybe trauma, for years and years.

The new documentary “Subject” is about documentaries themselves. Really, it’s about what it’s like to be in a documentary — about what happens when you let a film crew into your life, let the public see it all, let them judge you, and what happens later when people still recognize you, and think they understand something about you. Join us for a conversation about a changing ethical landscape in documentary filmmaking and what happens to people after the camera stops rolling.

We will screen “Subject” at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with producer and participant Margie Ratliff. Tickets are free, but RSVPs are appreciated. Details here.

Guests:

Jen Tiexiera | Co-director of "Subject" and co-founder of Lady Bird Films.

Margie Ratliff | Producer of the film “Subject” and founder of the non-profit Documentary Participants Empowerment Alliance.

Airdate: Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
