Exploring the Sonic World with ‘Sounds Wild and Broken’

Renee Bright
/
KUER

Our planet is filled with sound — birdsong, music, speech. Even the earth itself makes noise. That sonic diversity is in danger.

In his newest book, author David George Haskell explores the many sounds of our world, visiting forests and swamps, caves, oceans, the animal kingdom, cities and the human experience. Sound, says Haskell, isn’t just a chaotic buzz, it’s a creative force. And as the oceans and cities become louder, we lose more than sonic diversity: we inherit a less beautiful, less connected and less just world. David George Haskell joins us this Thursday at 9 a.m.

Guest:

David George Haskell | Writer and biologist His latest book is “Sounds Wild and Broken: Sonic Marvels, Evolution’s Creativity, and the Crisis of Sensory Extinction” [Amazon|Bookshop].

Airdates: May 6 at noon and May 7, 2022 at 11 a.m. Rebroadcast Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2023, at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
