Sebastian Junger is no stranger to death. He covered the war in Afghanistan for years. But it was a medical emergency that brought him face to face with dying — and an afterlife.

Junger was at home the day he suffered an abdominal aneurysm. While he was at the hospital, on the brink of death, Junger says he was visited by his late father, who told him that there was “nothing to be scared of. I’ll take care of you.” Junger survived the ordeal, but he was left with a question: What comes after death? His new book is a meditation on his own experience, as well as other people’s accounts of near-death experiences, and the nature of reality.
