The Fight Over Amendment D

District Courtroom

Utah lawmakers called themselves into emergency special session last month to draft a constitutional amendment that would give them the power to significantly alter voter-approved ballot initiatives. That change would need to be approved by voters, if, that is, the state courts allow it.

This all dates back to 2018, when voters approved a series of ballot initiatives, including one intended to rein in gerrymandering of local electoral districts. Legislators later altered that law, and in so doing, say State Supreme Court justices, they deprived voters of their rights. A panel of guests joins us to explain what’s at stake as legislators continue their fight for the power to change what some call “super laws” passed by voters. But are they willfully trying to deceive those very voters?

GUESTS –

Dr. David Magleby | Professor Emeritus of political science at Brigham Young University.

Saige Miller | KUER’s politics and government reporter, and co-host of "State Street"

Robert Gehrke | Government and politics reporter at The Salt Lake Tribune
