The Story of the Enslaved Christians who Co-Wrote the Bible

Scholars say the New Testament was authored by these familiar names: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul. But they had important help: slave labor.

That’s the part that biblical scholar Candida Moss wants to talk about — the enslaved people who helped create the foundational text of Christianity. When you read that Paul dictated his epistle to, say, a “secretary,” well, that person was probably enslaved. Slavery was common in the ancient Roman world. And here’s Candida Moss’s real claim: enslaved Christians didn’t just take dictation; she says they were biblical co-authors in their own right, whose influence shaped the meanings and messages of the Bible itself.
