But, they didn’t really fit a mold. They didn’t fit the female pop star mold, they were too loud for folk and most people assumed that because they were lesbians, then, of course, they were a couple. Their fans, however, did and still do understand them. Amy Ray’s and Emily Saliers’ songs are filled with harmonies and socially conscious lyrics, and have earned them decades-long, loyal fans — some of whom claim the band’s message of radical self-acceptance “saved their lives.” In the new documentary, “It’s Only Life After All,” director Alexandria Bombach mixed archival footage with modern day interviews to tell the story of the Indigo Girls.
“It’s Only Life After All” is part of our film series Through the Lens with the Utah Film Center. It will screen on the opening night, of the Utah Queer Film Festival this Saturday, October 26 at 6:15 p.m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Doug and the filmmaker Alexandria Bombach.
