Another legislative session is in the books. This year, lawmakers passed over 500 bills. We’re talking about what’s new after the 2025 Utah Legislative Session.

The Utah State Legislature banned collective bargaining this year, amid fierce protest from public employees. Legislators also restricted where transgender students can live at state colleges and universities. Meanwhile, lawmakers are holding back $60 million from Utah’s degree-granting public colleges. If those institutions want the money back, they’ll have to cut “inefficient” programs and reinvest elsewhere. Opponents are worried this is an attack on liberal arts. Teachers are getting a small raise, SNAP recipients can’t buy soda anymore, you can say goodbye to fluoride in the water, and say hello to a tax cut — for the fifth year in a row. Also, it’s officially “Utahn,” not Utahan.
