What Turns Siblings into Stars?

Some families seem to have the secret code to sibling success. How else to explain how an Olympic athlete, an award-winning novelist and a successful entrepreneur could all be raised under a single roof? The journalist Susan Dominus set out to answer this puzzle.

In a new book, Dominus profiles six families, trying to figure out their recipe for raising kids who dream big and aim high. All six come from vastly different backgrounds, and their dynamics, as in all families, are complicated. Nevertheless, Dominus found in them some common traits that elevated the next generation, and it doesn’t all come down to the parents. If anything, as Dominus learned, siblings’ influence on each other is often underrated. She joins us to examine the rewards — and burdens — of family ambition, and the intricate relationship of nature and nurture.
