The mid- 1970’s was a time when new, independent Mormon organizations were starting up. Organizers wanted to create intellectual spaces where members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could think critically about their faith and reconcile that with their tradition. Sunstone started as a magazine where these conversations could be more accessible to everyone. But, in 1991, the Church issued a statement against the group’s symposia, drawing a line in the sand against intellectual expression. Today, we mark the 50th anniversary of Sunstone, a publication critical to the intellectual history of the LDS Church.
