What Does It Mean that Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Killer was a Utahn?

David Condos
/
KUEr

22-year-old Tyler Robinson is in custody. He and his family were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Nothing we’ve learned about Robinson suggests that his faith had anything to do with what he’s been accused of: shooting and killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk on the campus of Utah Valley University. And besides, Robinson is said to have been somewhat inactive at church. But religion may have played a role in his capture. When authorities released photos of Robinson, his father recognized him. And in that moment, Matt Robinson turned to his bishop for council, and later, he turned his son in. Gov. Cox has expressed shock and sadness that Kirk’s murderer was “one of us.” We’re asking what that means and how the people of Utah are processing a tragedy that hits so close to home.

McKay Coppins | He’s a staff writer at The Atlantic. His latest piece is called “Trump Has a Warning for Spencer Cox.”

George Grylls | Washington correspondent for The London Times. His story is “The moment Tyler Robinson’s dad turned him in as a suspected assassin.”
