How One Man’s Love of Pot Launched a Movement

Dennis Peron
Join the Club
Dennis Peron

Cannabis activist Dennis Peron started the country’s first public dispensary in 1992—before weed was legal. We’ll talk with filmmaker Kip Andersen about what drove Peron’s activism.

A Vietnam vet, Dennis Peron says the first joint he ever smoked changed his life. But it wasn’t until he lost his partner Jonathan to AIDS that he became an activist. Before his death, marijuana was the only thing making Jonathan’s life bearable, and Peron wanted to make sure other people could access it. Fighting the law and incredible odds, Peron founded the Cannabis Buyer’s Club in San Francisco in the early ‘90s. Filmmakers Kip Andersen and Chris O’Connell spoke with Peron about his life and work before he died in 2018. Andersen is joining us to talk about the documentary that resulted. It’s called “Join the Club.”

“Join the Club” is part of our Through the Lens film series, in partnership with the Utah Film Center. The film will screen on the opening night of the Utah Queer Film Festival on Saturday, October 25th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Doug Fabrizio and the filmmaker Chris O’Connell. Admission to the screening is donation based. You can find more information about how to attend here.
