In tech parlance, if a machine helps you complete a difficult task more easily — like the way a car helps you travel faster — then you’re a centaur. You’ve got an enhanced, stronger lower body, but you still keep your dexterous upper human half. That’s technology working for you. What you don’t want to be is a reverse centaur. That’s someone working for a machine at an inhuman pace. And that’s a future that’s possibly in store for humanity unless, as Cory Doctorow says, we see through the A.I. hype and understand it for what it really is and who it benefits. He’ll be with us to talk about navigating life in the A.I. future.
