Currently in its fifth season, “The Chosen” boasts millions of viewers, many of whom are observant Christians, though plenty aren’t. That could be because the show takes its cues from secular, prestige programs, like “Friday Night Lights,” more than it does from typical religious fare. The show’s creator, Dallas Jenkins, says he wants the story of Jesus and his disciples to be about “real human beings.” And now the popularity of his show is helping other creators get their visions off the ground; Mel Gibson is directing a sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,”coming in 2027 and Martin Scorsese has released two seasons of a docudrama about the lives of the saints. The journalist Rachel Monroe is joining us to talk about the golden age of Christian filmmaking.
