The journalist Gabrielle Glaser reported the story for Frontline. In it, she speaks with women who say they were persuaded to leave their homes and come to Utah, where adoption laws are weak. Many of them come from vulnerable backgrounds who were handed lump sums of cash and say they felt pressure to sign over the rights to their children. Glaser meets prospective parents, too, who’d been sold on a faster, simpler path to adopting a child, but were left feeling uneasy by the process. Lawmakers in Utah have been trying to address the issue, but in the meantime, Glaser says, Utah has become a marketplace for babies. She’s joining us to talk about what’s happening and how it could change.
KUER’s Hugo Rikard-Bell has also been reporting on adoption in Utah. You can read his story about a couple who lost thousands of non-refundable dollars as they tried to adopt a baby here.
