El Niño is an expected climate phenomenon that comes from the Pacific Ocean. When sea temperatures near the equator rise, an El Niño phase begins. And while much of the world braces for potential flooding, fire and famine, some in Utah are hoping El Niño could mean we’re in for a much-needed strong winter, which in turn could be a boon for Great Salt Lake. But because of Utah’s geographical location, it’s hard to say what will happen. El Niño tends to affect the northern and southern parts of the state differently. We’ll be sorting through the possible outcomes here at home and around the West.
